This month’s special at McDonald’s is the Mega Teriyaki. A few months back, McDonald’s in Japan started doing the MegaMac, a Big Mac, with 4 bigger burgers instead of the usual two. It was great, but was apparently rather costly for the multi-billion dollar corporation in Japan, so they started limiting its sale at stores, seemingly to times when I don’t want one. Now, with Burger King in the news again after relaunching in Japan after a five year absence, Mac have needed to release something special...the 980kcal MegaTeri. Ever since I learnt about its limited month’s run, I’ve been really excited at the prospect of the combination of two of my favourites.
I finally had one last weekend. It was, frankly, a disappointment. Firstly, it can hardly be called Mega (a term that, at least within McDonald’s lexicon, seems to suggest 4 "burgers"), as it only has 2. It should be called a Big Teriyaki Burger. Secondly, the burgers themselves are not really much bigger than the single burgers in a normal McTeriyaki. Thirdly, it doesn’t come in a box (so you can handily store chips in the other half), but a wrapper with reinforcements. I think this could be what caused my burger to be somewhat Pisa-like by the time I opened it.
All that said, it is still a two story McTeriyaki Burger which alone is a great and wondrous thing. I feel that the MegaTeriyaki is that rarest of things; a case of McDonald’s advertising promising more than it delivers.
6/10.
