Today, I met one of the world’s few remaining legends. Yes, today, I met Len Goodman! For those that, for some inexplicable reason, don’t know who he is, I will quote from the blurb on his wonderful bible-for-the-21st-Century, Better Late Than Never:

“In an age of ill-deserved celebrity, Len Goodman is a man who’s truly earned his moment in the spotlight. At near-pensionable age, his big heart, cheeky sense of humour and no-nonsense advice have turned him into an unlikely idol for millions.”

He is also the head judge on Strictly Come Dancing, the greatest show™ on English TV. For those that really don’t know, Strictly Come Dancing is a show that exemplifies the twin pillars of British Civilization, celebrities and ballroom dancing. Anyway, Len was down at Westfield® London to sign copies of his (aforementioned) book. He was a true gent, coming into the store with his trademarked “seVEN!” and signing books and posing for photos. There were a few photographers from the local papers, brandishing their Canon 1D Mark iii’s and Canon L Lenses. When I stood next to them with my little T2, they noticed and crowded round to get a look at an “old skool film camera”. It was pretty sweet, the huge security guard looked pretty impressed.

When it came to my turn, Len was incredibly cool, even posing for a photo with me. Unfortunately, at that exact moment my camera decided to die, failing to load the new film properly, no matter how many times I tried, and leaving me without my future-family-heirloom. The security guard looked decidedly less impressed. I think that the problem may have been that Len’s devastating power, when looking directly into the camera, is too powerful for film, and can only be captured by digital technology. When I got home, I found that the next film worked fine, which just served to confirm my theory. All in all, it was Strictly Wonderful!

There’s a couple of other photos from Westfield® London in there too, this time from the opening day’s crowds coming to worship at this new temple to Mammon.

Today, I went to my school for the last time, to collect the last of my things from my desk, and to check the progress of the speech contest students as they start trying to learn their speeches. I also wanted to take a photo of the Emotion beauty salon on the main street on the way to my school. It’s a pretty average beauty salon, mainly used by local, well-off housewives and students at graduation and other important occasions. Walking past this place on the way to work every day for the past year, I have always wondered about the decision making progress that could have lead to the following being chosen as one of the photos used to illustrate the talents of the artists within. Maybe the area is, unbeknownst to me, big with circus performers…incidentally, the other two photos chosen seem to be of continental European lesbians circa 1990, and it gives me great pleasure to know that somewhere in the hinterlands of suburban Chiba, there is a sect of militant Prussian lesbians, shunning the modern world, whose only contact with the rest of us is when forced to work as clowns to earn money to make ends meet…it must be true. Emotion is the proof.

Eri has a hidden talent for seeing shoes that she likes, trying them on and liking them, procrastinating about buying them and upon finally deciding to do so, discovering that they have sold out. She had a bad experience a few years ago with a pair of Miu Miu boots, and the other week we saw a pair of Nike x Liberty Dunks that she (and I), really liked and when we returned to the shop to buy them, found they too had sold out. Yesterday, on going to the Nike Store in Kichijoji, we were pleased to see that they had started to stock them there too, after not having had them when I went to check the other week. I really like these. We’re just trying to work out whether to keep the white laces or change to the included purple pair. Decisions, decisions.

I finally got round to getting some new specs yesterday. The old ones were only ever really meant to be a cheap temporary solution to my glasses problem after 8 years of my really old ones, and I had got a little sick of looking like a 90s lesbian. The new ones have the (wonderful and appropriate) name of Viceroy and were made by Oliver Peoples, who’s alright by me as he was the favoured brand of Patrick Bateman. Can’t go far wrong with that. Click to see a gormless photo of me in them…

Eri and I went out Christmas present shopping again today – we decided to buy each other stuff in the sales instead of before Christmas. This afternoon we were in Stitch in Daikanyama, where I saw these shrink wrapped “軍手” (work gloves). Apparently they featured in the design festival in 2006 but I have never seen them anywhere for sale before. The only dissapointing thing about them is the quality of the English on the packaging, all very good save for some your/you’re and there/their/they’re mistakes. There were about 25 different varieties, like hiragana ones (Japanese text), Hokusai ones, Kanji ones and the other pair that I was very tempted by; measuring ones. I liked the idea of holding something in my hands and being able to measure its length at the same time! In the end though I went for these ones, which have a subway map on them. Going to prove very useful when drunk and lost, I feel! Good value for 1000円!
