Soundtrack Vol.1

I've been thinking of doing this for a while, and now, with hardly anything going on at work, I've actually got round to doing it. It's a mix of tunes from some of my favourite film scores. Here's the tracklist:

Passion: Peter Gabriel (From "The Last Temptation of Christ")
Air: Hans Zimmer (From "The Thin Red Line")
Morning Pray: Gustavo Santaolalla (From "Babel")
Goodbye: Kevin Shields (From "Lost In Translation")
Prophecy Theme: Toto (From "Dune")
To Heal: Underworld (From "Sunshine")
Tales Of The Future: Vangelis (From "Blade Runner")
Hunger: Hans Zimmer (From "Black Hawk Down")
Zaar: Peter Gabriel (From "The Last Temptation of Christ")
Abraham's Theme: Vangelis (From "Chariots of Fire")
Love Theme: Vangelis (From "Blade Runner")
Only Love Can Conquer Hate: Ryuichi Sakamoto (From "Babel")
First Sleep: Cliff Martinez (from "Solaris")
Ghost Dog Theme (With Dogs and EFX): RZA (From "Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai")
Arthur & Henry: James Newton Howard (From "Michael Clayton")
Sunshine: John Murphy (From "Sunshine")
The Echo Game: Shigeru Umebayashi (From "The House of Flying Daggers")
Kaneda: Geino Yamashirogumi (From "Akira")
Message For The Queen: Tyler Bates (From "300")

Foolish Expectations

Before leaving work yesterday, I turned on iTunes on my computer with the foolish expectation that when I got home it would be ready to play music right away, without me having to start it up (yes, I am that much of an anal retentive). The problem seems to have been that all my music was on my external hard drive, so the computer went back to the default folder. When I got home and plugged it in to the mac, iTunes started loading the library from the external HD again, but when it had finished, the main library was littered with those little exclamation marks that mean that it can't find where the songs are located. I flicked through and worked out about half were lost.

I wondered what to do and after a bit of searching on the web, saved my library file, deleted all the songs and then reloaded the library file. This time, it said something along the lines of "import successful, but some files could not be found". I looked down and the library had been reduced to about 11,000 tracks, about a third of what there should be. I searched the external HD in a panic, but there were about the right number of files there, so, for some reason, iTunes just can't find them...which is bloody annoying.

The only solution I have found, has meant deleting all my songs from iTunes, and then just dragging and dropping the iTunes library folder in iTunes again. It's worked and the library is back to an (unnecessary) 30,000 odd songs, but it has also deleted all my playlists and all the info about playtimes etc. Really, really annoying. I now have to go through and re-list about 200 odd album playlists. I could of course just not do it, but I wouldn't be able to look at the iTunes window without sweating or something else OCD.

I still have no idea why it may have happened in the first place, so I have no idea what to do to prevent it happening in the future? Anyone experienced anything similar? Probably...

WTF? Iain Lee?!

I just wandered out of my apartment block to go and buy a yoghurt (blueberry) from the store across the street, and sheltering from the rain in the lobby of the block was Iain Lee (off the 11 O'Clock show). Now, I know that seeing Iain Lee is not exactly on a par with Tom Cruise or Hitler or whatever (sorry Iain Lee), but it properly wierded me out. I used to watch the 11 o'clock show pretty regularly, so suddenly seeing its presenter was a bit of a shock. He's tall as well, and has quite a fit missus (both of which added to the shock). He even appeared to be speaking a little Nihongo as well, to the guy who had been performing in Mandala (the live venue in the basement, which they had obviously been to see). I don't know what to think?

I guess it just wasn't what I was expecting on a rainy night in suburban Tokyo...

Gilles Peterson: Worldwide Showcase at the Liquid Room

Last night we went to see Gilles Peterson at the Liquid Room. It was the third anniversary and they had a sick lineup including Jazztronik, Soil Pimp Sessions, José James, some of the cats from Kyoto Jazz Massive and Raphael Sebbag from U.F.O. It started with a DJ throwdown with Jazztronik, Kyoto Jazz Massive, the Soil Pimp Sesssions MC and then Raphael Sebbag. They all played some sick Jazz and house tunes, but for some (inexplicable) reason, the crowd weren't too into it, or at least weren't dancing much until Raphael Sebbag started to play some salsa. Then J.A.M. did a special live set with José James singing and scatting about with them. They made a really great, tight group - I really enjoyed it and the crowd seemed to get more into it. Next Gilles Peterson did a DJ set - a really sick set technically apart from anything else - I must find out what his first tune was...sounded a little like Bernard Herrmann, but I don't think it was. Then this new group called Kingdom Afrocks did a live set. I really enjoyed their set too, again a really tight band, with a sick keyboard player and brass section. Great stuff. The only problem for me was that the batteries in my flash died before I could use it and the Liquid Room staff wouldn't let me go upstairs and get my other one. Still took some photos, but not sure how well they are going to turn out. Hopefully the event will be broadcast tonight 4am-6am on J-Wave in Tokyo and then (I hope) on his Worldwide show in the UK next week. Click the flyer above to see some of the better photos I took.

Things that annoy me: No.1: Sunshine

While bored at work I was reading some of the top ten lists on the Guardian's web page. Their top ten sci-fi films are, in order, 1: Blade Runner (obviously), 2: 2001 (again, obviously), 3: Star Wars / The Empire Strikes Back (amusing that they left out Jedi), 4: Alien (I never really thought of it as a sci-fi film (although it is), but as a horror), 5: Solaris (brilliant, as was the more recent remake, although it was slated), 6: Terminator/Terminator 2 (I definitely don't see this as sci-fi, despite its pretensions, but as a action film), 7: The Day the Earth Stood Still (wonderful, much better than Terminator), 8: The War of the Worlds (the great original as opposed to the mediocre remake), 9: The Matrix (wtf?!), 10: Close Encounters of the Third Kind (amazing and insulting that anyone should rate it lower than The Matrix). Sunshine is not, nor should it be on the list. But, had they not royally arsed it up, it conceivably could have been.

In theory, it has a lot of the elements that a great sci-fi film should have. It has an interesting plot and a good cast, most of whom can actually act. It has a director of a pretty high calibre. It has good special effects, art direction, cinematography and a great soundtrack. Unforunately though, it has a plot twist at the end, of such mind-boggling-inbred-alabaman idiocy as to rate all the good points of the film null and void. I remember being really excited to see an good space-film again when I started the movie. There haven't been many decent sci-fi/space films recently. There were interesting themes being discussed. It seemed to be heading towards a satisfyingly pretentious conclusion, possibly involving cod-theology. But no. They had to go and reduce the whole experience by turning it into a stupid slasher film. I remember getting genuinely angry when watching it, as if the whole film had been a designed as a personal insult to me alone. I wanted to find the filmmakers and shout at then for ruining something that could have been alright...or even good.

But I consoled myself that even if the film had been a tragic waste of time, money and effort, at least the soundtrack could be enjoyed by itself. Nothing at either the Apple Store, nor Amazon. I went to the illegal-torrent-sites-that-I-honestly-never-use-to-download-anything-from-ever-honestly. Not a sniff. I went to the film's official website. After being annoyed all over again by the legions of idiots who were saying Sunshine is the best film ever, I found a thread saying that because of legal problems between Underworld and John Murphy (who shared the composing duties), the soundtrack was delayed. Indefinitely. Well, that's just great then. Cheeky bastards. Underworld, a band whose entire wealth and mainstream (at least) popularity came off the back of a film soundtrack, now fear that some decent music they have made recently might ruin their current reputation for immature nonsense. Instead I have to make do with one track from the film (To Heal), being released on their otherwise embarrassingly average album To Oblivion, and a badly mastered illegal bootleg of the film score ripped straight from a dvd. Movie companies wonder why people download illegal copies of things like this. Well, if they got off their arses and released the real score, we wouldn't have to.

I'm getting annoyed just thinking about the movie again. It didn't have to be awful, and that just makes it worse.

A Study in Pete

I took a lot of photos with my Holga at my friend Pete's band's gigs. "The Grimace" were one of the most promising up-and-coming bands in Tokyo until the the malevolent influence of the Japanese wife of the band's artistic powerhouse and the banging-pots-and-pans-together musical influence of another member's vegetarian photographer wife put an end to their dreams. They have now parted ways. These shots are not especially clear, nor especially good, but I quite like the gritty atmosphere that the slightly distorted Holga plastic lens lends the shots. I think they work relatively well as shots from a (really) small venue. As ever, click the photo to see the whole gallery.
